The main reason to own an old lamborghini is *that* v12. It’s the only reason to put up with the non-functioning electrics and insta-rust bodywork.

It’s a glorious, soulful piece of engineering artwork. I love small-blocks, but in this car it’s a pointless exercise…

1970 Lamborghini Espada with Corvette Power

This ‘70 Espada has the clean early bumpers and a love/hate green and gold paint scheme. The Lambo V-12 has been swapped out for Chevrolet V8, which should make this project far easier to get back on the road. Find it here from Gullwing Motorcars out of Long Island City, New York for $21,500.

1970 Lamborghini Espada Corvette V8 Front

Lose the front bumper guards and the exterior would be pretty much perfect. The paint looks serviceable as-is, except for a small section at the base of the rear window. The knock-off alloy wheels look original, and the overall proportions are helped a great deal by the almost nonexistent bumpers.

1970 Lamborghini Espada Corvette V8 Rear

The rear has the smaller early taillights and maintains the dual exhaust even with the V8. The rumble is probably a bit different, but still works for us. The interior is all original but looks pretty beaten. The passenger footrest and radio mounting are cool features. We can’t quite see if there is a third pedal, and the shifter doesn’t do much to tell us if this is an automatic or a manual. We hope it is a manual, but many V8 conversions artists take the easy way out and lop off the clutch pedal.

1970 Lamborghini Espada Corvette V8 Interior

This car has to have an amazingly limited group of potential buyers, which could be good if you are interested. Though no longer a pure-bred Lamborghini, the exterior design is what captivates us more than the original V-12. If it was cleaned up and in running condition, we would be quite impressed with this car. Especially if it was back on the road for under $30k.

Finland no longer suicide capital of the world

Filed under: Uncategorized — Phil @ 6:44 pm

Finnish politicians were baffled for decades as to why raising taxes hasn’t lowered the suicide rates. Then it dawned on them, maybe education was the answer

Finland has finally shed a bleak record as one of the world’s suicide capitals after the number of people taking their own lives in this Nordic state has dropped by 40 percent in the past 15 years. Nowadays around 18 out of 100,000 people commit suicide each year in Finland, about the same level as in France and Austria. In 1990, the number was 30 per 100,000.

The decline is attributed largely to better treatment for depression, but even experts cannot really explain why the drop has been so dramatic, admits psychiatrist Jouko Loennqvist, the head of the mental health department of Finland’s National Public Health Institute. “Depression is more often properly recognised, prevented and treated. We have had special projects and campaigns about depression, which is now better recognised and treated. Psychological support and social support are nowadays in better condition,” he said.

Finland’s dire reputation as a nation of suicidals dates back to the 25-year period from 1965 to 1990 when Finland experienced an economic and urban boom. During that period, the suicide rate tripled. By 1991, Finland was the world leader in teen suicides, and among the top three in overall suicides alongside New Zealand and Iceland. Faced with the grim figures, Finnish authorities dramatically increased funding to improve mental health and since 1991 the amount of available psychiatric help has doubled.

[…]Experts meanwhile dismiss the widespread belief that Finland’s dark winters, where the sun doesn’t rise at all in the north for several months, play a role in the suicide rate. “There is a link (between darkness and suicide) but it’s not an important explanation,” Loennqvist said, noting that suicides tend to peak each year at the end of spring when the sun shines late into the day. And experts point out that Norway, located at the same latitude, for a long time had a suicide rate that was half that of Finland.

You see, this blog isn’t ALWAYS so negative and critical…! :-)

Baker takes the cake at Rumble’s second night

Country fried rock group Cassavettes kicked off the second night of BCN’s Rock N’ Roll Rumble, at Harpers Ferry, with a Texas-size load of enthusiasm, but the closing band Baker walked away with the sweet prize.

baker.jpgIt was probably keyboardist Nicole Boudreau’s leg swinging dance, a la New Kids on the Block, which helped secure Baker a spot in the semifinals - I kid. The quintet drew the crowd close to the stage with the hook laden tunes, “Reputation,†and “Fingers,†captured them by giving away egg shaker percussion instruments and then the drummer finished the set with an acrobatic flip over his kit. Based on his post-gymtastic giggles and blushing red cheeks, this maneuver didn’t to go as he planned. I guess he did not intend to knock over the entire drum set. Oops!

While tricks and favors seemed a little, “Vote me for class president!’’ Baker’s instrumental talent, as a whole, was impressive. cassavettes.jpg

The Cassavettes undoubtedly had the toughest spot in the lineup but the four members didn’t let an early set time hurt their performance. They called the audience to attention at the first note of “Carolyn Don’t Leave Like This.†And, when singer Glenn Yoder and bassist Coyote Scott Jones jumped onto the speakers near the audience, it was a long awaited display of showmanship.  AloudNext came female-fronted rock group Aloud, which we predicted would win this round. A slow start picked up speed when Jen de la Osa leapt from Ross Lohr’s drum riser. But aside from the stunt, her voice was muffled and she seemed more interested in flirting with Lohr than she was attending to the audience.

Ark RoyalThird on the bill was Ark Royal (formerly Almada), with new bassist Pete Golan (Waltham) and drummer Johnny K (PGD). The four members of this ‘80s-style rock band were happy to swing their flowing locks for the crowd, dance from one side of the stage to the other and smile at the young ladies in the audience. Lyrics and chords were straight forward and solid but the indie-centric audience of Allston was not gushing.

Night 2 is over but there’s plenty more Rumble madness throughout this week. This evening’s lineup of Strictly for the Birds, My Little Radio, Protokoll and Age Rings is sure to offer a few more surprises.

In interesting case of the difficult/ambiguous judgment, though one might argue the one spouse deal might be less a law than a true preference/need of the Eldar.

“Elbereth’s nipples” indeed.

Flashback:

I hate it when a photo slips through the cracks. I just dug up this photo, circa 1999-2000, of Joel Meinholz I shot and then never managed to get printed.
